Brief History of WV Blue Star Dedications

The first West Virginia Blue Star Marker was dedicated in Weirton on May 27, 1970.  It was lost during road construction in 1972.  Gauley Bridge Garden Club voted to place West Virginia’s second Blue Star but was vetoed by the D.O.H.  Vesta Van Meter and Beulah Hash dedicated the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Blue Stars in 1986 (on the new interstates) and won the NGCSC Award.  Van Meter loaned this chairman her invaluable award book to copy.  Huntington, Charleston, and Princeton dedicated #5, #6, and #7.  The first seven were large markers.  Also, Ann Sampson installed the Princeton Blue Star as a wall mount, which was the first of its kind in West Virginia.

Mary Booker, Roadside Development/Blue Star Chairman under Ann Sampson (1991-93) received a wonderful gift from Mrs. Carl Michael, a former West Virginian in Sun Valley, CA, in honor of her father.  Mary requested that five garden clubs sponsor Blue Star Memorials in the December 1992 issue of WV Garden News, and Huntington Garden Club was the first to respond.  Mrs. Michael gave another gift under Patty Hudson/Sandra Walters (1993-95).  Mary Frances Snyder/Jane H. Lundblad (1995-97) completed the dedication of the Mrs. Carl Michael Blue Stars with the exception of the Emma Scott Garden Club of Elkins.  Judy Guye, mayor of Elkins, noted that it was not dedicated until 2000 because of Corridor H Road difficulties.  Approximately 14 Blue Star Markers were placed with this gift from 1993 until 2000 and are denoted with an asterisk beside its size.

Blue Star Marker Dedication #58

Department Of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in  Huntington included state and district club members as well as area veterans, members of Boy Scout Troop 20, the Marshall University Brass Ensemble, Spring Valley High School ROTC Honor Guard and a vocalist from Huntington High School.

Ohio Guyan District Garden Clubs dedicated Blue Star Memorial Marker #58 on

Saturday, May 17. According to district director Ruth Ann Koch, “The sun was shining and a wonderful breeze kept us cool as we gathered in front of the Medical Center

 Under Consideration:

  • Pine Grove Garden Club
  • Richwood Garden Club

 Miscellaneous:

  • Marker #1, dedicated in 1970 near Weirton, was lost or misplaced during road construction in 1972.  A valiant effort to locate this marker is underway.  If not discovered, a new one will be placed.
  • Two markers are to be moved and rededicated.  They are:

1)      Richwood Garden Club

2)      Meadow River Garden Club

  • Marjorie Hollandsworth is in the process of refurbishing an old Huntington Blue Star.  Ditto with Mon-Cheat’s I-79 S.  Others need attention.
  • The 1995 Fayette County Garden Council’s yearbook (Leah Thomas, President) has a picture of a Blue Star installed at State Police Headquarters that reads, “Spade and Trowel.”  The present one reads “Red Bud Garden Club.”  Where is the “Spade and Trowel” Blue Star?
  • The dedication dates of :

       1)   Rhododendron and Bluefield Blue Star at Bland St. in Bluefield

       2)   Huntington Garden Club’s Blue Star at City Hall on 5th Street and

       3)   South Charleston Garden Club’s Blue Star at MacCorkle Ave.  in South  Charleston are needed to complete the WVGC history of Blue Star Dedications
