** DISTRICT MEETING - FEBRUARY 25, 2010 (click here for details) **

Chuckanut Director’s Message

December 2009

The weather was a lot like Xmas last week with about 5 “ of snow at our house.  I’m glad it’s gone.  It was beautiful but inconvenient.  Now we can finish our shopping in the wind and rain. A great Xmas gift is tickets to the Swing into Spring Dinner Dance to be on April 17th at the St. Joseph Center.  Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by sending a check to Chuckanut District 3614 Friday Creek Road, Burlington Wa. 98233 The tickets are “Will Call” so if the purchase is a gift you can indicate this in a card to the recipient.  How easy, nothing to lose and something to look forward to in the spring.

The fall WSFGC board meeting and holiday flower show in Sea Tac in November was beautiful and informative.  Chuckanut District was well represented with 6 members entering floral designs and horticulture.  I was asked to give a presentation on Cyberspace Membership.  The information will be sent to all the district directors as it is being accepted with great interest.  I think the web is a valuable tool for knowledge, and using it for garden club membership will be an asset.

Another presentation was on Mason Bees, valuable pollinators. As you may know the honeybees are disappearing, as are the butterflies, bats and moths.  I read an article “Honey bees disappearing may be a greater threat than global warming”.  This is of great concern as we depend on pollination not only as gardeners, but also for sustaining life.  We can do our part by not using pesticides, learning about Mason bees and putting up Mason bee houses.

Many district directors reported that the “Golden Days” project of planting yellow daffodils is in full swing.  Many Blue Star Memorial Markers are enhanced by the addition of groups of daffodils.  In our own district one club planted pots of them to be taken to nursing homes and assisted living homes in the spring.  They will be a cheerful addition to brighten the spirits of everyone who sees them.

If you have something you wish the board to address please email it to me at maseweber@wavecable.com
I wish all of you a very Merry and healthy Xmas and New Year

Blessings from Chuckanut District Director

Fieldtrip to Garden d'Lights at Bellevue Botanical Gardens

Full Gardens

On Saturday, December 5, 2009, a small group of Chuckanut District members braved the COLD and went to Molbaks to view their Christmas displays, had dinner at nearby Mi Tierra Mexican Restaurant, and then off to see the Lights at Garden d’Lights at Bellevue Botanical Gardens.  Just spectacular.   Everyone remarked on the amount of work that the volunteers at Bellevue Botanical Gardens put into these displays every year.  Don’t miss this next year, if you haven’t been before. SKAGIT WOMEN BUILD PROJECT
Landscape Design and Installation Project

Chuckanut District has a new Project:  A Landscape Design and Installation at the ‘Skagit Women Build’ Habitat for Humanity House in Sedro-Woolley.  The plan will use native plants.  The $187 Judith Juno contributed from a fundraiser walk at the NGC national convention she attended this last Spring will help fund the project.

On Saturday, October 25, 2008, Gerry Douglas, Sharon Budd, Iola Ratcliff and Sharon Merrill attended the Groundbreaking Ceremony for this event.

Women Build Groundbreaking

Below is a photo of the Mother of the Family that will live in the home, Belen Martinez.  She is looking at the plans with Gerry Douglas and Sharon Merrill.

Since the groundbreaking, our Chuckanut team has planned, measured the property and designed a landscape.

We hope to install a walkway in November, 2009, when the final grading has been done, and then begin planting in the Spring of 2010.

Contact Gerry Douglas if you are interested in being on the work crew for this project.

POETRY CORNER

A Spring Morning

Awake, awake my sleepy head,
You'll miss it all lying abed.
A new neighbor is moving in
To the place that's empty been.
I waved to her, she dared not speak,Junco in Maple
Or lose the straw clutched in her beak.

Come, we will bring some yarn and twine,
A welcoming gift for her to find.
The Ides of March have come and gone,
The days of spring are marching on.
Our winter guests are leaving too.
You must help me bid them fond adieu.

I saw them far up in the sky,
A fleet of swan go sailing by.
We earthbound creatures can but stare,
And wish them safe to their somewhere.
We know not how they find their way,
Nor who will guide them back some day.

Beneath our feet, above our heads,
A lovely spring before us spreads.
Nature abounds, is waiting there,
For we who see, for we who care.
Up and about, lets romp in the dew.
A wondrous morn is awaiting you.
