Protecting Our World: Living Green - Living Clean

Thursday, November 5, 2009
10:00am-2:00pm
 in Maney Hall at Oaklands Historic House Museum
900 North Maney Avenue, Murfreesboro, TN.
The workshop is Free; Brown Bag lunch is $8.00.

Make checks for lunch payable to: Garden Lovers Club.
Mail to: Nancy Harris, 1190 Blake Court, Murfreesboro, TN 37130;
MUST include garden club name and number of members attending with the check.
Registration Deadline is October 31, 2009.

The goal of "Protecting Our World; Living Clean, Living Green" is to engage garden club members as "advocates for identifying, promoting and utilizing improved practical techniques clean, green living". The workshop will provide attendees with information and projects to take back to their members and the wider community.

We will hear from Tara Biller of Green Proof Your Home, on "simple steps to make your home green". Jen Barrie of KilowattOurs who will speak on and guide us in hands-on projects for youth which " trains them to become energy conservation leaders in their homes, schools and communities". Marge Davis will give an update on the status of the Tennessee Bottle Bill which, if enacted, will decrease litter in Tennessee by at least 50%.

TFGC District II Awards 2009-2011

District II Garden Club Director’s Theme Achievement Award

1st, 2nd and 3rd place certificates will be awarded to clubs on the following:

“Making A Difference” Going Green and Staying Clean

(A Book of Evidence is required)

 

District II Garden Club Working with Senior Citizens Achievement Award

$25 Cash Award for 1st place, plus certificates for 2nd and 3rd place winners.

This award is for working with Senior Citizens in the following areas:

A – Home Care Gardening Activities

B – Assisted Living Gardening Activities

(A Book of Evidence is required)

 

District II Garden Club Youth Achievement Award (A year long project)

$25 Cash Award for 1st place, plus certificates for 2nd and 3rd place winners.

This award is for working with youth involving any of the NGC and/or TFGC objectives

A - Junior (Grades 1-5)

B - Intermediate (Grades 6-8)

C - High School (Grades 9-12)

 (A Book of Evidence is required)

 

Going Green Staying Clean Youth Award

1st, 2nd and 3rd place certificates will be awarded to clubs on the following:

            1 - Activities on teaching our Youth ways to Beautify the Earth

            2- Working with Youth on the Environment

            3- Working with Youth on Butterfly Conservation

            4- Working with Youth on Tree Conservation

A - Junior (Grades 1-5)

B - Intimate (Grades 6-8)

C - High School (Grades 9-12)

(A Book of Evidence is required)

Project Ideas

BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT:
Bulb Planting: Daffodil Bulbs for Schools

50 FREE daffodil bulbs per school are available for your school for use in school beautification
projects which include student and teacher participation.
Bulbs must be planted at school.

WHEN:
Prepare planting bed in October
Bulbs available early November (you may have to pick them up from Beautification offices)
Bulbs must be planted by the third week of December.

PURPOSE: Beautification of school property
Community enhancement
To provide a school science project completed during the school year (plant in fall – bloom in spring)
