Murrysville Garden Club
New Projects

PhotobucketA goal of our club is to grow new members and to acquaint the public with who we are and what we do.  Hopefully, an off shoot of that goal will be to grow new members.  The Murrysville Garden Club will be having some evening meetings to accommodate those in the community who work during the day or are not able to attend daytime meetings.  A few meetings were held in the last quarter of 2008.  The attendance was sparse, but those in attendance enjoyed the programs.  We will continue this “experiment” for the 2009 Garden Club year and then evaluate the results.  Also, to stimulate further interest in gardening, some of our Master Gardeners will be conducting an evening series of garden workshops.  These workshops will be held in conjunction with the Adult Education series sponsored by the Franklin Regional School District.  Workshop topics will include container gardens and water gardens, basic landscape design, turf management and week control, soils, and what to look for when going to a nursery.  A list of Murrysville Garden Club programs, dates and times will be given as a handout.

Our second project is to rejuvenate the existing butterfly habitat the garden club had established.  Last year, Sam Scupien, a scout looking to earn his Eagle award, helped to refurbish the arbors and built placards to hold information about the plants in each of the beds.  He also built a frame for a poster that shows the different types of butterflies, caterpillars, and lists host plants to find them.  This butterfly habitat is in close proximity to one of the elementary schools.  This will make identification of butterflies and caterpillars easier for student and visitors.  Science teachers at the school may choose to hold a class there to view the butterflies in their natural habitat.
