The Greensburg Garden Center is a non-profit educational organization whose main purpose is to stimulate interest in horticulture, to provide and disseminate all forms of garden knowledge, to support community improvement, to create public interest in the conservation of the environment and our natural resources and to render assistance annually through a scholarship fund to students continuing their education in fields related to our objectives. The Garden Center serves Westmoreland County and areas surrounding the region. It operates a hub for 10 community garden organizations. The GGC was formed in 1960 under the name of the Garden Council of Westmoreland County. In 1969, Katherine Mabis McKenna donated a new multi-level, multi-purpose building—The Greensburg Garden and Civic Center—to the city of Greensburg as a memorial to her deceased son. The building is now managed by the Westmoreland Cultural Trust. The GGC consists of an office, 850-plus library holdings on horticulture, a workroom, storage area and garden house. The center rests amidst 4.186 developed acres, with approximately 60 % in lawn and garden that once incorporated a 150-specie arboretum. The Garden Center is working with the Westmoreland Cultural Trust to reestablish the arboretum (defined as: a place where trees, shrubs, exotic flowers and plants and herbaceous plants are cultivated for specific, educational and aesthetic purposes) to create an aesthetically appealing and tranquil environment. It is the goal of the GGC to create a sense of appreciation for nature, an awareness of conservation and an ability to help create a pleasurable experience for all visitors.
