June 2009 Meeting Review

Parkdale Garden Club met on June 2nd at the Parkdale Grange. With ten members present, we welcomed our newest member Jory Osborne. President Mary Lou Larsen went over things that needed to be taken care of this month- dues to the state and district, and travel plans to convention on the 15th.
We lost Ruth Aubert last month after a long illness. Members recalled memories of Ruth and her many years of service to our club. Jo Huff volunteered to pick up a mini rose to plant in the Aubert's section of the Bicentennial Memorial Garden. The rose- a beautiful pink, was planted on the 4th by Mary Lou, Larry, Jory, Jo, and Pam after a work secession in the garden.
We talked about joining with the Grange on a cookbook project. Larry gave an update on the community service workers, and we hope to host them in the garden on the 17th.
After the meeting, we joined in making arrangements for Parkdale businesses as part of the National Garden Week celebration. Mary Lou, Jory, and Pam delivered the flowers. Pam will also be hosting on garden club information table at the Master Gardener tour on Saturday June 13th.
June 9th President Mary Lou Larsen and our new member Jori, finished our Garden Week project, making and delivering bouguets to bussiness in the Parkdale Mt Hood area.
On June 6th President Mary Lou Larsen and Pam Crider went on the Master Gardener garden tour pre-tour. All the gardens had unique features; Pamela Wolters garden, a return from the first tour in Hood River, is nestled in a wooded setting along the Indian Creek ridge. Also a repeat to the tour was the gardens of Jurden & Susan Hess, a sustainable urban naturescape. This garden was Mary Lou's and my favorite, and features mainly native plants, and raised beds for growing vegetables. With its bioswales in place, uses little to no water other than rain. One garden on the Washington side, featured a prize winning view down the Columbia River Gorge, we liked seeing the grape sized Gooseberries and many Roses.
Our next meeting is the annual potluck picnic at Mary Lou's. July 7th at noon.
