President’s Report 2007-2008

Odell Garden Club is a very unique club that keeps increasing in new members. We loose one and gain two. Hood River is an area that can grow just about anything if you can keep the wind in control. Hood River is a growing community and we often have guests attending our meetings to see what we are all about.
We started September 2007 by having a picnic at Gorge Nursery and Aspen Creek Park. It is a beautiful park with a swing, landscaping and a pond. When I asked owner Steve Richtor to tell us about adding Winter interest to our garden, he said we should go south for that. Then he went on to tell us how he adds winter interest to his garden and Nursery is with wetlands, planting grasses and plants that attract birds. He gave us a tour of his habitat and home. We came away with many ideas for a natural landscape to help the environment and wildlife.
This year I started giving out an “Atta Girl” award to someone that has inspired or been of help to me as President. The first one I gave was to Shirley Cheney. She has been a member since 1973. President for four years, is an excellent designer and a Master Judge. At one time she said that she wasn’t my friend anymore but has since changed her mind. I call on her for rules, floral questions and guidance. She doesn’t loose patience when I just don’t get it.
October is our Fall Flower show in conjunction with Harvest Fest. Horticulture was way up with 188 entries. There were 46 designs. Judges commented that each year they are pleased with our progress in designs. We have design classes before most of our meetings and it helps us by just the exposure and practice. We decide what we want to do each month and bring finished designs that we go over each one and talk about how to improve or just eww and aww.
October, we learned from Jackie Shaw how to start shrubs from cutting for our home and plant sale in the spring. Hopefully some went home and stuck starts in their garden.
In November our own Carroll Davis and only man (a retired school teacher) taught us how to identify plants. We dissected different flowers from Orchids to dahlias.
I awarded Pam Lago with the “Atta Girl” award for her dedication to the club; she is always helping out by giving a program, offering her home and garden for programs to keeping our meetings straight as our secretary.
We also hosted our annual Wreath making event and true to the past we had a snow and ice storm but Dufur was very persistent and they came when the Gorge was reopened. We had a good turn out with some people from the community also attended. Parkdale and Celilo Garden Clubs also came. We distributed 27 swags to business in Odell and to 3 honorary members and shut-ins.
January was the first time as president that I had to cancel because of snow. We had planned to make birdbaths out of vases and instead some of the ladies came to my house and we put some together when the weather cleared.
February was our fourth annual Tea Party. We had five teams and this year we tried to use the judge’s point system for “People’s Choice”. The club learned that it isn’t easy to pick winners. We all had a delicious luncheon and got to know our club members on a more personal basis. The tea tables were gorgeous and showed such clever themes.
March Lore Sampson did a presentation on clematis and we kept her overtime because we all had lots of questions on when to prune, when not to prune. How deep to plant and how to fertilize.
We plan on taking a field trip to see the tulips and lilacs in Woodland WA.
Our annual plant sale is getting very poplar and it is our fund raiser for the year. We donate to 4-H scholarship, flower show school, SMART, delegates to State Convention, all our members subscription to the Mahonia and over $200 to State Projects.
Our Garden Therapy is done in May, when we provide flowers for the dinning room of the Hood River Care Center for their Mother’s Day Celebration. Last year we made corsages but this year we will also be making bud vases so they will be able to enjoy them in their room.
July is the Hood River County Fair and we host the floral show. Every year we keep growing with community support and interest. We gain new members from visitors to our show. We have great help from the other clubs in the county hostessing and participation. We look forward to it every year.
August we have our month of rest and have a picnic at volunteer members home. We have a very friendly club that seems to enjoy each other and are always willing to share starts and ideas on growing, planting, pruning and getting down and dirty in the garden.
Thank you,
Respectfully submitted, Norma Curtis Odell Garden Club Odell, Oregon
