NER SPROUTS Patriotic Program Memorial Day May 29, 2006 In honor of those who bravely fought and we remember them... Your garden club can promote our NGC President’s Patriotic theme, and the NER Unified SPROUTS Project by: 1. Establishing a public garden in red, white and blue to visibly proclaim honoring our brave service men and women, many of whom made the supreme sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy. 2. Help a child to establish a garden in red, white and blue as a horticulture project. The garden will be an educational adventure, a point of beauty and a source or pleasure for family and friends who visit the area. 3. Promote rose culture at your meetings; invite your local VA Administrator to address the club and promote the enjoyment of our national flower, the Rose. 4. With children, junior gardeners, or youth clubs assist them in delivering plants to the VA Medical Hospital, clinics, nursing homes, and cemeteries on Veteran's Day. Teach them about “out reach” and benevolence to our elderly and our Veterans. 5. Contact your city/town Veteran's Affairs Department and work with them in creating a program along with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America to commemorate November 11, 2005 and Memorial Day May 29, 2006. 6. Take a poll: how many members do you have that have served in the Armed Forces? You might be pleasantly surprised! Recognize them!! Select children to honor your own member(s) with a long stem rose, our national flower. Educate our youth as to the importance of this National Holiday. Read aloud to children The Peace Book by Todd Parr, ISBN 0-316-83531-5 (2004). You will enjoy this delightful book too! 7. Have Scouts conduct a flag ceremony to open your November meeting, Invite members of the Armed Forces, present them with a red rose. 8. Fall Planting: encourage members assisted by a child, to plant a *Peace Rose in their gardens. Take a picture of the job well done! *The Memorial Roses Series by Star Roses: Outstanding Rose varieties to consider in honor of our Veterans are the new "Memorial Roses" series was introduced in 2002 by the Conard -Pyle Co.
