Award winning judge and grower, Bonnie Mirmak, will present a one-hour Hands-on descriptive program with Q&A on "How to Prepare Soil for Potting". Attendees will take home their free potted mum. Holly Hill Garden Club Bus Tour Sundbach Garden, Shank/Matthew Garden and Surreybrooke Nursery Wednesday, May 28, 2008 The 2008 Holly Hill Garden Club tour takes you to to two private gardens near Shepherdstown, WV and the Surreybrooke Nursery in Middle town, Ml). The first garden visit will be the beautiful 3-acre private garden of landscape architect, Eric Sunback. Mr. Sunback 's 20-year-old garden includes a series of sculpted spaces, multi-stemmed trees and plants with special colors and shapes. After lunch at the historic Bavarian Inn, you will visit the garden of John Shank and Joe Matthew. Designed on English themes, this magnificent garden includes a Victorian Gazebo, a rose cutting garden, perennials and much more. Lastly, on the trip home, the tour will stop at Surreybrooke Nursery which is famously known for its inspiring display gardens and intriguing cottage shop. Part 2 of Landscape Design for Homeowners: Tours in the Garden 9am-noon. Need help sharpening your design skills? Critiquing existing designs will improve your skills. Accompany staff horticulturalist and design instructor Cindy Brown into the gardens of local homeowners to see their design solutions. Perhaps you’ll find a solution to your landscape challenge. A class member receives a free garden critique by class participants and the instructor. Completion of Landscape Design for Homeowners and/or familiar with the basic elements of design required. Limit 22. $160 New Series: Designing with Perennials Explore the principles of how to combine perennials and woody plants to bring out the best in your garden design. Searching for that special container to accent garden areas, expand garden space, or provide interest to an empty corner? Design a container garden with succulents that does that and more. Mary Frogale, staff horticulturalist, provides inspiration and information on container gardening and then helps you design a succulent container to take home. Plants, soil and containers provided. $55 Saturday, June 21 Framed Botanical Art: Pressed Ferns 9:30-11am. Pressing leaves and flowers is an ancient art form with many decorative uses. Horticulturalist Nancy Olney shows how to transform fern fronds into attractive art. Participants will mount pressed ferns on paper and then frame the delicate treasures to take home. $25 Friday, June 27 Designs from the Garden 1:30–3 pm. Arranging cut flowers and foliage from the garden, Bruce Nash, Northern Virginia Community College instructor and professional floral designer shows you the basics of floral design and creates floral masterpieces you can duplicate at home.
