Washington National Cathedral Garden Tours sponsored by All Hallows Guild
Tours of the three-acre Bishop’s Garden at Washington National Cathedral led by All Hallows Guild docents, are being scheduled now through October 31. The gardens are part of the 59-acre Cathedral close, and present a series of beautiful visual experiences. There are two perennial borders, three herb gardens, including a ninth century herb garden of monastic and infirmary herbs, and an extensive rose garden in bloom May to November. In the Garden are medieval sculptures from abandoned monasteries, including a ninth century baptismal font, a pilgrim cross, and fifteenth and sixteenth century bas reliefs. – some donated by George Gray Barnard, American sculptor and art collector and an important benefactor of the Cloisters in New York. Most Wednesdays at 10:30 A.M., an All Hallows Guild docent meets walk-in visitors at the Herb Cottage, located on the South Road of the Cathedral Close, -just off Wisconsin Avenue. Self-guided tour brochures are available in the Gift Shop in the Herb Cottage. Monday through Saturday group tours can be reserved by calling: 202 537-2304, and are also available through October.

Wednesday, June 24 A Day on the Farm 7:30am- 4pm. Leave the city behind for a gander at what’s growing on the farm. Pleasant Fields Farm and Mt. Olympus Berry Farm grow vegetables, fruit and flowers in Hanover and Caroline counties. Tour two different farms to discover first hand how bountiful vegetables, flowers and fruits are grown, enjoy a picnic lunch on the farm, and of course shop for fresh produce, berries and vegetables straight from the field. Fee includes tours, box lunch, bus, and driver tip. $65
Saturday, June 27 All About Weeds: Let’s Walk and Talk 9:30-11:30am. Spring and summer weeds are sometimes hard to differentiate from desirable plants. Discover the difference with Brenda Skarphol, Green Spring curator and horticulturalist. She identifies those weeds and explains the best and safest ways of coping with them. Dress for a walk in the garden. $15.
District IV Spring Trip
SAVE THE DATE TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2009 Join the District IV Spring Trip for a fun day in the gardens (sustainable, organic, herbs and boxwoods) at two varied locals. Stone Manor in Lovettsville, VA includes both the gardens and a tour of the charming B&B.
A yummy catered lunch will be served before the bus continues on to Oatlands Plantation near Leesburg, VA. This historic house on the National Trust for Historic Sites includes tours of both the herb and formal gardens (4 acres) as well as the house. Don’t miss the Carriage House Gift Shop and new Potting Shed! Refreshments will be served on the return bus ride to end an enjoyable day sightseeing, strolls, shopping, food, friends and flowers!

You are invited to attend an outdoor clinic on summer care of roses. Consulting rosarians will discuss the pruning, fertilization, watering and other activities necessary to combat diseases, insects, heat and other problems that may occur in your summer rose garden.
