RECYCLING INITIATIVE
National Capital Area Garden Clubs, Inc.
With the support of the National Garden Clubs,
our own "state," National Capital Area, is beginning a recycling program, and asking each garden club to support this initiative.
We will be collecting used cell phones and ink jet and laser cartridges.
Cell phones contain lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic. If they reach landfills or incinerators, those chemicals can leach into the soil and groundwater, causing environmental and health hazards. The tons of cartridges that clog our landfills can be refilled and reused, or melted down and m
ade into other products, reducing waste and the use of raw materials.
Contact friends, your work place, and local businesses to collect additional cell phones or cartridges. Long plastic newspaper bags make great holders for the laser cartridges!
Recycle companies will pay us for each usable donation, and the refunds come back to National Capital Area Garden Clubs to be used for our own environmental projects. Please do NOT turn in cartridges that have already been refilled—they cannot be used again.
Please collect items at your club meeting, and bring them to your Fall District meeting. Subsequent donations can be turned in at other state gatherings (council meetings, Morning of Design, etc), or at the March District meetings.
For more information, or to make other arrangements for delivery of collected items, please contact Recycling Chairman Carol Carter.
