SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS! _ Our three scholars graduate in May, 2007; Beth Moore with a Master's degree in Environmental Management, Patrick Still with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry, and Nelly Branson with a Bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture. Our two new applicants are very deserving of our assistance.
Allison Palmer lives in Bethesda, Maryland and is an under-graduate at the University of Maryland. She expects to graduate in May 2009 with a degree in Land and Water Resources Management. Allison's interest in environmental science and water resources comes from living near the Potomac River and seeing the damage from pollution and the effects of flooding and runoff from overdevelopment. Last summer she had an internship with Maryland's Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection doing stream analysis. Allison wants to work as a Restoration Hy-drologist and study water resources with a special interest in streams and rivers and how they can be cleaned using bioremediation. Allison was awarded $4,500 from the combined interest of the March, Mooseburger, NCAGC, Nees, O'Connell and Paciulli Scholarship funds. Her application will be sent for consideration of a CAR scholarship.
Abbie Turiansky lives in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Oberlin College in 2003 with a BA in Environmental Studies. Since graduation she has worked and volunteered for nonprofit organizations and is currently employed at Amnesty International. She wants to attend graduate school pursuing two Masters degrees, one in Environmental Management and one in Public Policy. She has been accepted to a joint-degree program at Duke University and is waiting to hear from other universities with similar programs. Abbie attended the School for International Training in Belem, Brazil, and saw first hand the trees being cut in the Amazon as a means of subsistence for families. Her goal is to work in finding ways to balance conservation policy and sus-tainable development at a community level without sacrificing forests and farmland. Abbie was awarded $4,500 from the combined interest of the Collingwood, Dominion Valley, Galvin, Harris, Kimmel, Lang-Van Dersal, Luce and Yacht Haven scholarship funds. Her application was sent for consideration of a NGC scholarship.
