April 26, 2008: The Westmoreland Hills Garden Club of Bethesda, Maryland, will hold its annual plant bake sale on Saturday, April 26, from 9:00 to noon. The sale will be held at the Corner Garden, maintained by the cub, which is located at the intersection of Jamestown and Elliott Roads. The sale will feature a variety of annual and perennial plants, including wildflowers and herbs. Many of the perennial plants come from members' gardens. Garden accessories and home-baked goods will also be for sale. Proceeds from the sale support the club's conservation and beautification projects. Diane Manning (301-320-3247) May 1: MAY DAY - MAY 1 - The Bethesda Community Garden Club's 65th Annual Plant Sale is Thursday, May 1, 2008 at the Bethesda Farm Women's Market, 7155 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda from 7:00 AM until 1:00 PM rain or shine - come early. There will be wonderful buys on a large selection of perennials from members' well-tended gardens, plus herbs, annuals, and shrubs. Proceeds benefit various community projects including landscaping at Bethesda and Davis libraries. Public parking is available immediately behind the Market. May 3: Woodley Gardens Garden Club will be holding its annual Plant Sale at 505 Goldsborough Dr. (corner of Mannakee and Goldsborough in Rockville) from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Specializing in Perennials for sun and shade, and as ground covers. May 7-8, 2008: Did you ever wonder: Why tree leaves change color and fall off each autumn? Whether garden clubbers were being precise or showing off when they speak Latin? Why your neighbor’s flowers look better than the same ones in your yard? Which products to choose among the hundreds at the garden center? What to do with cuttings or seeds given to you by garden club members? Why your annuals require frequent watering yet other plants seldom need any? These and many other mysteries will be explained at Gardening Studies School, Course 1, U. S. National Arboretum, May 7 & 8 2008. May 17: Gaywood Garden Club is having a Plant Sale Saturday, May 17th 8:00am-12:00pm. The sale will be held at the triangle at the intersection of Tierra Dr. and Gayfields Dr., Silver Spring, MD. Directions: Take Layhill Rd. to left on Gayfields Dr. and follow it to the triangle. The sale will include Divided and Home Grown Plants of all types. What do our clubs do? Many things! Design and maintain community gardens Provide Garden Therapy programs Support Seniors, Shelters, Police, and a variety of community support centers Conduct a variety of fund raisers such as garage sales, plant sales, and bake sales, as well as a number of other unique efforts. | A Champion Tree is the largest of it’s species that is registered with the Forest Conservancy Board in each county in the state. County lists are compared to identify State Champions, and state lists are compared to identify National Champions. The list is updated annually. To see pictures of the Champion Trees belonging to District IV Club Members, click here.
One such tree is this State Co-Champion White Oak. It is 276” around, 96’ tall, and 119’ wide. | If you or one of your club members also has such a grand tree, please send the information and picture to the newsletter editor, and it will be added to the Champion Tree album.
