NEW PROJECTS Children’s Program at Batesville Public Library
BGC members will sponsor a program on gardening and environmental education on July 21, 2009, for approximately fifty children at Batesville Public Library. Children will make soda bottle terrariums using recycled soda bottles and will learn how to care for plants. Youth Poetry, Poster, & Essay Contests Members will sponsor contests at South Panola Schools, Pope Schools and North Delta Schools. Students in grades K-5 will demonstrate through original drawings of Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl, their understanding of wildfire prevention and basic environmental conservation principles. Students in grades K-9 will express their thoughts and ideas through different types of poetry based on the 2010 theme, “Our Beautiful World”. Students in grades 9-12 will write essays using the theme “Respect the World around Us”, and if judged the best in the State, will be entered in the running to win a $1,000.00 college scholarship offered by National Garden Clubs, Inc.
“Auntie Litter” Environmental Education Programs Members will present five programs to approximately fifty second and third graders at North Delta School to teach children how to eliminate litter and conserve our natural resources, to create awareness of the dangers posed to our environment, and to practice the environmental “3 R’s: Reuse, Reduce waste, and Recycle”.National Garden Week Members will promote National Garden Week by hosting the Hills and Delta District Flower Show, placing flower designs in local businesses, newspaper and radio promotion, Mayor’s Proclamation of Garden Week in Batesville, posting signs proclaiming National Garden Week in flower pots on Square or in public buildings, and by placing exhibits prepared by Garden Information Center throughout public locations in town. Energy Conservation Batesville Garden Club will host Marlin Williams from TVEPA, who will present a program on energy conservation on March 10, 2010, that will be open to the public. Deep South Unified Regional Project Members will participate in “Protecting Our World: Living Green … Living Clean” by discussing monthly “green” tip provided by GCM Chairmen. Members will also share these tips with family and friends, with other civic organizations, and in school classrooms. Members will be challenged to research environmental topics and report at club meetings. CONTINUING PROJECTS Garden Information Center Members will provide several exhibits on various gardening topics and/or NGC goals and objectives, and these exhibits will be rotated throughout several public buildings in town. All exhibits will be on display during National Garden Week, June 6-12, 2010. Young Gardeners “The Sprouts” will plant a tree on February 12, 2010, in observance of MS Arbor Day and will have at least five meetings during Club year with other garden related activities. Yard of the Month Members will recognize efforts of area homeowners with monthly Yard of the Month sign in yard and photo in local newspaper, The Panolian. Valentine’s Day Tea at Fairfield BGC members will continue hosting Valentine’s Tea for approximately fifty residents at Fairfield Retirement Home. The Tea will he held on February 10, 2010. Civic Development and Landscape Members will continue to maintain the two perennial flower beds on Batesville’s Public Square. Contributing Projects Members will continue to support our State and National Garden Club projects with the following donations:$ 25.00 Clower-Thornton Nature Area to rebuild GCM’s park that was damaged by Hurricane Katrina 25.00 Governor’s Mansion Fund to enhance the beauty of the grounds 25.00 Natural Disasters (USA) Fund to restore gardens that have experienced a natural disaster 50.00 Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc. State Headquarters Fund to restore and maintain our State Headquarters 175.00 Scholarship for Panola County high school student to attend the Mississippi State University Summer Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Seminar 60.00 Lanoux Youth Nature Camp – paper products donated for use during camp week Members will also contribute to other State and National Garden Club projects as voted on by members.
