News (Click photos to enlarge) JANUARY 4, 2010 MEETING At the January 4, 2010 meeting Ila Roberts was presented the Gaule Lifetime Achievement Award. President Park gave her the written award and Susan Gaule presented Ila with a beautifully designed pin. Ila is a 40+ year SCGC member. She has chaired numerous committees and served as Club officer. She created books of evidence that resulted in SCGC receiving numerous National, State and Regional awards. As our club photographer she documented several president's books, which are in the library. She has helped to make the club what it is today. We love you, Ila.

STATE FAIR DESIGNS This is just a small representation of designs at the 2009 Illinois State Fair. These were some of the designs by SCGC members. Carolyn R. a Decatur garden club member and now also a SCGC member is shown with just one of her winning designs. Think seriously about entering the State Fair. If you really don't "dig" floral arranging, try entering horticulture. Take a look at the last picture of horticulture (hosta leaves). I'll bet you had a leaf or a flower that was worthy of entering the State Fair. What can you lose....a leaf or a flower? Try it, you just might like it.
******************************** BOARD MEMBERS MEET GCI RESIDENT STEPHANIE GREEN Several of SCGC Board Members arrived at Karen G.'s home to meet Stephanie Green, GCI President for a very pleasant evening.
******************************** SPRINGFIELD IN BLOOM SCGC Community Design Committee was requested by the City of Springfield to provide 6 designs for public places where the judges for the competition, "Springfield In Bloom" would be visiting. This committee has been busy this summer.

Following our 80th Annual Luncheon/Meeting we were treated to a design program - "Anniversary Reflections" presented by Michele Birkner from "Michele's Floral Events" in Peoria Heights, Illinois. Pictured are a few of her designs. Note the first photo showing a single design. It is an inverse biedermeier. Absolutely lovely! Also of note is the last photo which Michele designed specially for SCGC. It is based on the SCGC logo. Thank you Michele.

This award is named in honor of two outstanding members and is given to a member for exceptional personal effort and service to the club. * * * Our fantastic program "Off The Beaten Path" was presented by Frank Feysa, AIFD, of "The Garden Gate Florist in Streetsboro, Ohio. He was assisted by his long time friend and our own SCGC business member, Rae Roberts Griffith, owner of True Colors Floral Artistry in Springfield. The following photos are just a sample of his talent. He showed us several of the hand tied bouquets which are so common in Europe. All of his designs were raffled making for a lively ending to a very enjoyable afternoon.

******************************** District III's Blue Star Memorial marker dedication was held at the I-72 Pride of the Prairie Rest Area, westbound, near Agenta on May 18, 2007. The Macon County Honor Guard and the Argenta-Oreana High School Band participated. Landscaping of the marker with wildflowers grown at the Big Muddy River Correctional Center in southern Illinois was completed by IDOT. Refreshments were provided by District III Garden Clubs.
******************************** Another Successful Plant Sale This year's plant sale was approached with trepidation. The weather definitely was not cooperating - freeze, hot, freeze again. But...working 'till deadline babying our newly potted plants paid off. The line of anticipatory gardeners wound outside the building; workers put the last touches on their wares. Happy faces showed the result. Good Job one and all!
******************************** Prior to our Annual Meeting held March 22, 2007 the District III Spring Meeting was held. This photo shows a few of the members "hard at work".
