Springfield Civic Garden Club Summary of Horticulture Scholarship

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarship program is to support students in environmental related fields of study, such as conservation, landscape design/architecture, horticulture, botany, turf management, etc.

Standards: Merit is the predominant selection criterion, consistent with viewing the scholarship as recognition of academic achievement. Also considered is a commitment to a career in the fields listed above, character, variety of avocation, and financial need.

Amount: One scholarship in the amount of up to $1000 will be awarded to the winning applicant for the current school year. This scholarship may be renewed to the applicant if merited, and if the Springfield Civic Garden Club Board of Directors has the funds, and votes to continue scholarship funding each year. The winning applicant from this year may be competing with other applicants for any future years of awards.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Applicant's family residence must be in a GCI District 3 County.  Applicants must be pursuing, or planning to pursue, an environmentally related course of study. High school seniors must have a B average or above, and college students must maintain a B average in the major discipline.

Judging: All applications received by SCGC by the stated deadline will be carefully reviewed by the Scholarship Committee of the Club, and the committee's recommendation voted on by the Board of Directors of the SCGC.

Application Procedure: Applicants MUST completely fill out the application form, provide transcripts as required, and submit a personal letter stating goals for the future, any awards received, and any other pertinent information. Three (3) letters of recommendation are requested. Any information regarding employment performed in a related field would be helpful.

Deadline: May 1 of the year for which the applicant is applying unless otherwise noted. Good Luck!

SPRINGFIELD CIVIC GARDEN CLUB (SCGC) OFFERS TWO SCHOLARSHIPS
TO THE 2009 SUMMER HORTICULTURE INSTITITE
FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (K THROUGH 5TH) TEACHERS

This year the University of Illinois Extension will again offer a three day Horticulture Institute to K to 5th grade teachers interested in learning how to incorporate “hands on” learning into their classroom.  This three day workshop will be offered twice:

 Springfield on July 14, 15 and 16   & Decatur on June 30, July 1 and 2

No experience with gardening is required.  Seed starting, plant cuttings, growing indoor plants, plant parts and the children’s “favorite” – insects, are some of the activities presented by the Horticulture Educators.

Other topics include:  healthy snacks; the importance of exposure to green spaces “No Child Left Inside”; Agriculture in the Classroom resources; plant science curriculum; kids gardening books; and an opportunity to share ideas with fellow teachers.

Participants will receive 19 CPDU’s, a notebook of lesson plans covered in the institute, plants for use in the classroom, lunch and snacks all three days.  The Springfield class will be held at the University of Illinois Extension office, Building #30, Illinois State Fairgrounds, Springfield.

The cost of the three days of classes is $75.  Springfield Civic Garden Club is offering two scholarships of $75. to interested teachers.  If you are interested in obtaining one of these scholarships, please complete the form below.  The information you submit will not be sold or given to any organization other than the Springfield Civic Garden Club Board of Directors and internal University of Illinois Extension use only.  SCGC must receive your request by June 22.
