Member of The Garden Clubs of Illinois, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc.

The Lake Bluff Garden Club was honored by the Village for its years as a supporter of civic beautification, conservation, and the patriotic spirit.   Members were selected to serve as honorary Parade Marshalls for the village’s famous 4th of July parade, titled this year “Red, White, Blue and GREEN.”  Barbara Stuessy, long time active member, served as the Grand Marshall.  Children, husbands, and past members joined the garden club group in the parade.  They were enthusiastically applauded along the route as they marched, proudly  wearing Statue of Liberty and Uncle Sam costumes.
See parade pictures on the following “Gallery” page.

About Us:

  • Lake Bluff Garden Club meets at 11:45 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month  in members’ homes or  in a nearby public facility.    Except on special occasions, members bring their own sandwiches for lunch, with salad, dessert, and beverages provided by the hostesses.  The business meeting and program follows.  You need not possess the proverbial “GREEN THUMB” to join.  Novice gardeners, as well as experienced ones, are welcome to learn more about a variety of subjects.  They will hear gardener- friendly advice on planning, planting and maintaining their own gardens from fellow members.  Guest experts are invited to give programs on a variety of subjects, including nature, the environment, horticulture, and flower arranging.   Field trips to outstanding gardens in the area and nurseries, along with visits to Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, occur from time to time.

The Lake Bluff Garden Club, founded in 1917, has consistently been a force for good in the community in its efforts to enhance Lake Bluff’s beauty with conservation and beautification projects in public areas, most recently  an ambitious conservation project on the Sunrise Park bluff bordering Lake Michigan was completed.   Literally thousands of trees have been planted along public parkways and in the parks.  Seasonal container gardens planned and planted in the Central Business District, books given to the public library, holiday decorations provided throughout the downtown, garden therapy programs for challenged young adults and the home bound, and many more events fill the Club’s busy calendar.

History:

  • Lake Bluff Garden Club is a non-profit organization.  In the spring of 1917 a group of Lake Bluff women gathered at the home of Mrs. Maurice Mandeville on Scranton Avenue to share their interest in gardening.  During World War I the club's activities centered around such projects as rolling bandages, providing flowers for hospitals, knitting gifts for the "doughboys" and tending their gardens.  In 1922, the 16 ladies decided it was time to formalize the organization.   They adopted a Constitution that stated;  The object of the club shall be to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening; to aid in protection of native trees, birds, shrubs, and wildflowers.  Noteworthy events in the club's early history included the first civic planting in May 1923 at the Lake Bluff East School, the first plant sale in 1926, and the first flower show in 1927.   In 1927 the club joined the newly-organized Garden Club of Illinois, Inc (now Garden Clubs of Illinois) and National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. (now National Garden Clubs, Inc.)  At the present time there are 34 active members and 11 associate members and 5 honorary members.  Civic beautification remains a significant part of the club's activities with projects funded through the Mother's Day Weekend Garden Market on the Village Green.
