Projects

Below are the projects Elmhurst Garden Club has been involved with in 2008 and are working on in 2009.   

Continuing Projects

bulletElmhurst Garden Walk & Faire – This is the club’s largest fund-raising activity for the year and all profit is donated to educational scholarships, local cultural, or charitable causes. It includes the viewing of several private & public gardens located throughout historic Elmhurst. The Faire, in Wilder Park consists of an art & craft boutique & "Ask the Experts" resource tables.  .

bulletElizabeth’s Friendship Walk Herb Garden – Located in Wilder Park, this 8,800-square-foot garden project won First Place for Landscape Design from the National Council of State Garden Clubs for 1999 and other awards in 2002. The garden contains over 50 varieties of culinary, medicinal and fragrant herbs. This project is a joint effort between the club’s horticulture committee and the park district.

bulletGarden Therapy – Held monthly at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Elmhurst, Senior Day Care Center. EGC won state honors for our effort in our Garden Therapy program in 2001 & 2002.  

bulletScholarships – Available for college students majoring in horticulture, botany, landscape architecture or environmental studies. 

bulletElmhurst Public Library – For 53 years EGC has decorated the library for the holidays. EGC won state honors for this project in 2001.  

bulletPlant Sales - We have exchanges and/or sales at least twice each year. 

bulletMemorial Books – In the past, EGC has honored its deceased members by placing garden and nature-themed books in the Elmhurst Library. Visit our web site for a complete listing of these books and check them out, too. 

bulletGiving Garden - EGC encourages all gardeners to participate in the fight against hunger.
 
bulletBrick Pavers – EGC places engraved pavers in the Elizabeth Friendship Walk to commemorate special occasions and honor outstanding members.

bulletTrees for the Prairie - provided funds to purchase oak trees for the prairie savanna on the Great Western Prairie in Elmhurst, maintained by the Prairie Management Advisory Council.

bulletElmhurst Library Children’s Reading Courtyard - EGC made several contributions to help finance the garden for this special location at the new library. Expected completion is 2004. 

bulletKitchen Expedition/House Walk - EGC members used their floral design skills to decorate two houses for this Elmhurst Junior Womens’ Club fund-raiser.  The EGC & EJWC help out each organization as needed.  This year's Kitchen Walk will be:  (TBD)

 

New Projects:

bulletSpeaker’s Bureau – EGC members have developed and are available to give programs on: Chicago area Garden Conservancy sites; growing and using herbs; and drying and preserving flowers.
