Ideas to Increase Membership

  • Have a garden program at the library with one or a few local clubs. Three or more members can take a topic to discuss - bugs, perennials or favorite shrubs, etc.
  • Have a booth at a Home Show
  • Choose a yard of the month - publicize the winners in the local paper, leave a flyer at the door telling them they won and inviting them to the next meeting.
  • Give a certificate to the winner and one year free membership
  • Have a beautification project in town - identify it as your club's project.
  • Have a club competition - challenge members to bring in new members.
  • Send letters to new residents or ask realtors to give the flyer out.
  • Have a Mad Hatter Tea Party; members and guests wear hats - perhaps decorated with flowers. Have an interesting program, example:  how to attract hummingbirds to your yard.
  • Distribute posters in town and at the libraries and garden centers inviting the public to an event.
  • Have a "Special Nite" party - give pansies to guests and those that brought them.
  • Have a landscape or nursery tour - perhaps the business will do a workshop.
  • Have a progressive members' Garden Tour 9:00 am coffee & cake, 11:00 am salad, and 3:00 pm dessert.
  • If the town has a parade, enter a club float.
  • Potluck supper, you may invite a friend.
  • Plant flowers in beds at flagpole, nursing homes, library, with sign by _________________ Garden Club.
  • Get bright t-shirts with club logo on front; one club put Wednesday Weeders on back to identify them when working on a public garden.
  • Invite non-members to assist with community activities.
  • Have one public meeting to attract attention each year.
  • Always show enthusiasm about your club.
  • Start conversations about gardening when in line at the supermarket or garden nursery centers.
  • Hand out cards to anyone interested you meet, giving them information how to contact you or your club.
  • Give library information desk or city hall a monthly plant or arrangement with a supply of club business cards next to the plant.
  • Christmas House lighting contest with prizes
  • Spring Fling garden luncheon and demo on floral design
  • Have a garden tour and invite the public.
  • Include meeting times in Church bulletin.
  • Donate a service for fundraiser where the members may be younger; example: high school booster club, the Rotary, or the YWCA.
  • Members of your club could offer:  6 hours of weeding, 5 hours of landscape design, a lesson in pruning, advice in creating a butterfly garden., etc.
  • Promote the work of your club in the community in print and on local radio or TV.
