Two outstanding students were awarded scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year for their proven records of continuing achievement.
Jennifer Czaja, Wheeling, IL -- $1500 Scholarship
Jen Czaja is currently entering her junior year at the University of Illinois, majoring in Landscape Architecture. She is in the James Scholar Honors Program and currently maintains a college GPA of 3.55. She has also served as a board member of the Department of Landscape Architecture and the Fine and Applied Arts Advisory Board.
Her other college activities include working tech and stage crew for the Penny Dreadful Players (a student run theatre group) and Vice President and cofounder of the Toxic Motion Dance Company (a student run modern dance group).
Jen graduated with “highest honors” from Wheeling High School in June 2007, ranking 14th of 505 students. In high school, she participated in the Orchesis Dance group (as dancer, choreographer, and set designer), Tech and Stage Crew for Wheeling High School Theater, and various National Honor Society volunteer projects. She also played the #1 varsity position on the Wheeling Golf team all 4 years, and qualified for regional and sectional competitions both junior and senior years. For the past 6 years, she has been employed at Chevy Chase Country Club in the position of golf services.
Matthew Bizjack, Elk Grove Village, IL -- $1500 Scholarship
Matt graduated from Elk Grove High School in 2009 and is receiving the AHGC scholarship for his freshman year. He is attending the University of Chicago in the Chicago neighborhood of Hyde Park, and is planning to study Biology and Environmental Sciences. He received numerous awards throughout his four years of high school, including the Biology Senior Medallion, Seven Semester 'A' Honor Roll Award, National Merit Commendation, and many others. He was voted most environmentally conscious among his peers and hopes to continue his love for the environment in the future by researching ways to abate the change of the word's climate. When he isn't doing his mountains of homework, Matthew enjoys hanging out with friends, playing soccer, building computers, camping with family, and enjoying great books.
Matt graduated from Elk Grove Village High School with a high school GPA of 5.66. Mathew has maintained straight A’s for his entire high school career. By taking honors courses in high school Mathew will be starting as an advanced freshman. In high school Matt was an avid reader, participated in soccer, the marching and symphonic bands, the Green Grens (an environmentalist group), and in nerdy areas such as the Science Olympiad, Scholastic Bowl and Math Team. He also raised funds for Shelter, Inc. and was active in the Obama for President campaign where he traveled to Iowa, Wisconsin and Indiana talking with people during the campaign.
