Monthly Garden Hints

 January:

Keep birdfeeders filled.
Do not plant until ground is warmer and not too soggy.

 February:

Remove dead foliage on ornamental grasses.
A good time to review catalogs and plan your Spring garden.

 March:

Fertilize pansies and violas now.
Do not aerate or dethatch the lawn until the grass has turned green.
Straighten droopy tulips by adding pennies to the vase

 April:

Photograph garden as spring bulbs come into bloom.
Prune azaleas – if needed (even Encore) after bloom is completed followed by fertilizer.

 May:

Deer repellent recipe – Mix in a blender 2 raw eggs with ¼ cup water and lots of Tabasco sauce.  Add water to make ½ gallon.
Spray every 10 days and after each rain.

 June:

Pinch off dead blooms on daylilies as soon as you notice them.
Make a note in your journal as to how plants are performing.

 July:

Patio plants dry out quickly.  If they wilt each day, replant in larger pots or install a drip irrigation.

August:Fine-textured mulch conserves moisture better in dry conditions.

 September:

Divide and replant daylilies and hostas
Autumn is the ideal time to plant.  Plant when temperature is cool and we have had some rain.

October:Mulch heavily around all tender plants.

 November:

Spray a two month repellent for deer on all plants.
Provided the ground is not too wet, this is the ideal time to plant trees in Georgia.

December:Clean, oil and repair all garden tools and replace as needed.
