President's Message Hi everyone, It’s hard to believe October is already here. The weather has been so unseasonably warm that I am still in summer mode. Hopefully cooler weather will prevail and we can enjoy the beautiful autumn colors in our gardens. Our September meeting went well and we all had a nice opportunity to catch up with each other. Thank you to the hostesses and those that brought the delicious food. I would also like to give a big thank you to Carol Vicidomino who worked so hard over the end of the summer to prepare our Yearbooks which were ready for our first meeting. She did an excellent job. Please use your Yearbook, it is full of all the information you need for the 2007-2008 year. At the meeting our program chairs gave us a brief overview of the programs that will be presented this year and everything looks interesting and engaging. Please refer to your Yearbook for a description of upcoming programs. Thank you, Michelle Maher, Mary McLaughlin and Donna Peck for doing such a wonderful job arranging programs to increase our gardening knowledge. Lastly, I would like to encourage all members to think about people they would like to invite to become members of the High Rock Garden Club. We would like to have our November meeting be a New Members’ Meeting. We have a wonderful program arranged for that evening and we will do a presentation about the Club to prospective members. Please bring names and addresses of prospective members to the October meeting or e-mail them to me so that we can send out an invitation to them. Thank you all for your efforts on behalf of the Club and for your continued participation. I look forward to a wonderful and productive year. HRGC September Meeting Minutes September 11, 2007 17 in attendance including new member Tricia Walsh, a friend of Yvette’s. Welcome Tricia! (You will find all of her contact information in our Yearbook) Location: Home of Yvette Shakespeare ►President’s message: Our new president, Yvette Shakespeare opened the meeting reading a poem, “One Baby Step at a Time”. She then proceeded to pass a basket of fall bulbs for each member in attendance. A fantastic way to begin the new programming year!! Thank you Yvette for both the gracious hospitality and engaging the group! Presentation of gifts: Time was given to celebrate the huge efforts of our past co-presidents, Janice DiStasio and Nancy Madden! They were presented with beautiful gifts by the club! Thank you so much for all the work you do! Year Book: Thanks to Carol Vicidomino who did a lot of work over the late summer, our yearbooks were ready and passed out. If you did not receive yours, please contact Carol or Yvette. A huge job. Carol thank you for all of the work!!! Membership Drive: Yvette suggested a method of attracting new members, a Membership Drive to take place during our November meeting. We currently have 21 active members and 11 honorary members. A perfect opportunity for all of us to bring guests as we have a tried and true program in place. Holiday Sparkle at the Senior Center including an arrangement to raffle off. Please be thinking about women who may be interested in coming as guests and joining HRGC. Additional discussion covered an attempt to attract younger members and possibly putting in an advertisement in the Suburban press to announce the November “Membership Event”
►Hospitality: Please consult your Yearbook for all assignments and make arrangements for a replacement if your assignment doesn’t work for you. Many thanks for your attention to this as it will make everyone’s life easier. ►Treasurer’s Report: Deb Brennan announced that the Club presently has $6,752 in the bank. She presented a tight budget for the Fiscal year that runs July 1 – June 30, 2008. Income projections are $2607 Expense projections are $2723 The group in attendance which represented a quorum voted to accept the budget and drop the Recycling of Ink Cartridges (even though most are opposed environmentally), as it only brings in $3.00 per year and with increased societal awareness, many are sending cartridges to their favorite charities. ►Programs: Review of upcoming programs with some important information to note. RSVP’s and payment for the Dec. 4th Holiday Workshop featuring Rosemary Morteo, will be accepted no later than November 20! Period, end of discussion! Don’t miss out as this is one of the one’s we all look forward to. May Annual Fundraiser: We discussed the need for this annual event. There are many new things HRGC members would like to do as a club and we need an annual fundraiser to accomplish as our income and expense lines typically mirror each other. Members were asked to think about this and future discussion will ensue.
►Community Garden: The bench donated by the Kovalcik family will be installed at the end of September. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be scheduled for the end of October. All those who donated to the Garden will be invited. Local landscaper Ian Brown will be doing the installation and maintaining of the Community Garden. Thanks for all of the work Community Garden committee!!!
FUTURE: Annuals for the Community Garden have been built into the budget, noting that future mulch and watering is being “somewhat’ taken care of by the town. ►Pine Island: Pine Island looks great but does need continual deadheading and watering through the fall months especially given the drought conditions. It will require careful monitoring. Anyone interested in helping please contact Loren Kovalcik or Nancy Madden. ►Other Civic: Rosemary Morteo announced the 25th annual Caritas Hospice Fundraiser. This year it will take place on November 17th. Anyone interested in helping, please contact Rosemary. Respectfully submitted by Suzanne Heffernan Secretary, HRGC September 30, 2007 *************************************** Treasurer’s Report The two previous accounts for the old and Collaborative checking accounts have been now closed. A brand new account has now been opened to be used in the name of HRGC, Inc.
