A Traditional Mass Design staged on a white pedestal 36” H with a 14” square top. Class is placed on a white 6” riser in front of a white wall

Class 5: “Tiffany Glass” 4 entries
Designer’s choice of style staged on a white pedestal 36” H with a 14” square top. Class is placed on a white 6” riser in front of a white wall 8’ H. Eligible for the Designer’s Choice Award.
Class 6: “City Lights” 4 entries
An Exhibition Table, Type I staged on a white pedestal 36” H with a top 32” W x 20” D and an attached backboard 32” W x 45” H. Eligible for the Tricolor Award.
Class 7: “Visions of Paradise” 4 entries, Club Competition
A Vignette staged in a space 48” x 48”. Class is placed on a white 6” riser. Eligible for the Club Competition Award.
General Rules
1. This is a Standard Flower Show staged according to the rules of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. using as its authority The Handbook for Flower Shows, 2007 Revised Edition and any changes published in The National Gardener. There must be an emphasis on fresh plant material.
2. Entries are open to all members of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc. and any member of National Garden Clubs, Inc. except in Horticulture Division I where any amateur gardener may enter.
3. To enter any Division, contact the Entries Chairmen.
An Exhibitor’s Meeting will be held at the Barnstable County Fairgrounds on Monday, June 16, 2008, 9:30 AM.
4. Entry days are Friday, July 18, 2008 and Tuesday July 22, 2008. The tent will be open at 7:00 AM on Friday and Tuesday. Only Committee members and exhibitors are allowed in the show area at entry time. Exhibitors must leave the flower show area promptly at 9:00 AM. Before the exhibitor leaves the show area, the Classification Chairman will check for conformance to the Schedule. NO Horticulture entries will be accepted after 8:30 AM.
5. Judging will begin at 9:30 AM. The decision of the judges is final. Awards are given only if merited. Judges are required to consider non-blue ribbon winners for 90+ recognition. Only required personnel will be permitted in the flower show area during judging.
6. Exhibitors may water/refresh their exhibits between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Exhibitors enter through Gate 1.
7. Removal of exhibits: First Entry Day exhibits are removed only on July 22 between NOON and 1:00 PM.
Second Entry Day exhibits are removed only on July 27 between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM. Exhibitors unable to pick up their exhibits at the above times should make arrangements with the Staging Committee at entry time.
8. Some plant material must be used in every exhibit. The following are not permitted in any Division: artificial plant material, the treating of fresh plant material, cut fruits or vegetables, menu foods.
9. Plants listed on the Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List are not permitted in any Division. A current list may be found on www.mass.gov/agr
10. Wild collected plants of species listed by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage Program may not be used in Standard Flower Shows of the GCFM or its member clubs. A current list may be found on www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/nhesp. Cultivated plant material appearing on the list may be used if the exhibito provides a typed card noting that it has not been wild collected.
11. The Flower Show Committee will endeavor to protect all exhibits but cannot be responsible for loss or damage to the Exhibitor’s property.
HORTICULTURE DIVISION RULES
1. All classes are open to amateur gardeners. All specimens, whether cut or container-grown, must be fresh and grown by the exhibitor.
2. Cut annuals and biennials must have been in the exhibitor’s possession from seeds, cuttings, or immature plants, perennials, bulbous blooms from planting of bulb, tuber, corm, etc. or at least 90 days.
3. Combination plantings must have been in the exhibitor’s possession and growing together at least 6 weeks.
4. Cut specimens should not have any foliage below the water line (exception: Gladiolus). Maximum stem length is 30 inches.
5. Entry Cards, available at the Exhibitor’s Meeting and at the Show, should be completed in advance, if possible, and in pencil or water-proof pen. All horticulture specimens must be labeled with the correct botanical name (genus, species, and variety/cultivar) to be eligible for a Top Exhibitor Award.
6. Exhibitor may make more than one entry per class or sub-class, if each is a different genus, species, variety, cultivar, type, size or color.
7. The Committee will provide containers for cut specimens and wedging material, if needed.
8. All entries must be approved by Classification Chairman before placement by Committee.
9. The Committee may delete or subdivide any class. Horticulture entries will be judged by the appropriate Scale of Points found on pages 297-302 in The Handbook for Flowers Shows, 2007 Revised Edition.
DESIGN DIVISION RULES
1. Entries are open to all members of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc. and any member of National Garden Clubs, Inc.
2. The Committee will provide all staging.
3. Each entry is to be the work of one exhibitor. Exceptions: Design Div. II, Class 7 (Club Competition), where two or more members of a garden club collaborate.
4. An entry card listing all plant material (common names) must be given to and initialed by the Classification Chairman before the exhibitor leaves the show area. Plant material used in designs need not be grown by exhibitor.
5. Landscapes or scenes are not permitted in the Design Division.
6. Refer to Handbook pages 189 and 190 (N) for NGC policies regarding additional components and techniques allowed.
7. An exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired, but only one exhibit per class. Designs must be completed by the exhibitor in the show area, except in Class 7, Club Competition.
8. The exhibitor must find a substitute if unable to fulfill this commitment.
9. Design entries will be judged by the appropriate Scales of Points found on page 303 of The Handbook for Flower Shows, 2007 Revised Edition.
National Garden Club, INC.
STANDARD SYSTEM OF AWARDING
The Standard System of Awards allows for one first place (scoring 90 points or above, Blue Ribbon), one second place (scoring 85 points or above, Red Ribbon), one third place (scoring 80 points or above, Yellow Ribbon), and one or more Honorable Mention (scoring 75 points or above, White Ribbon) to be awarded in a class or sub-class.
Scales of Points - Exhibits are judged according to the Scales of Points in the Handbook for Flower Shows, 2007 Revised Edition pages 297-303.
Judges are required to note 90+ non-blue ribbon winning exhibits.
HORTICULTURE AWARDS
An AWARD OF MERIT of orange ribbons may be awarded to a named exhibit scoring 95 points or more. Sections A, B, D, and E are eligible.
The ARBOREAL AWARD of green ribbons may be awarded to a named exhibit scoring 95 points or more in a section of tree or shrub branches. Section F is eligible.
The AWARD OF HORTICULTURAL EXCELLENCE of orange, green and blue ribbons may be awarded to the named exhibit of fresh plant material judged to be the highest scoring in the Horticulture Division. Only one may be offered and awarded. In sections offering Section Awards of Merit, or Arboreal Award, only winners of these awards are eligible for the Award of Horticultural Excellence. In sections not eligible for Section Awards or Arboreal Award, blue ribbon winners scoring 95 points or better are eligible for the Award of Horticultural Excellence.
DESIGN AWARDS
The TRICOLOR AWARD of red, blue and yellow ribbons may be awarded to a blue ribbon winner scoring 95 points or better. All plant material used in the design must be fresh but need not dominate. A minimum of 12 exhibits are required to place the award. Classes 1, 2, 6 are eligible.
The DESIGNER’S CHOICE AWARD of purple ribbons may be awarded to a blue ribbon winner scoring 95 points or better. Within NGC policies, the designer has complete freedom to choose fresh and/or dried plant materials and other components for this award. A minimum of 12 exhibits are required to place the award. Classes 3, 4 and 5 are eligible.
The CLUB COMPETITION AWARD of light blue ribbons may be awarded to a blue ribbon winner scoring 95 points or better. A minimum of 4 exhibits are required to place the award. Class 7 is eligible.
SPECIAL AWARDS
The evaluation panel will select the winners of the following awards presented by the Southeastern District of the Garden Club Federation of MA, Inc.
DISTRICT DIRECTOR’S AWARD may be awarded to a design at the Barnstable County Fair that is judged to be the most creative interpretation of the schedule. The Award, in the form of a certificate, may be awarded only once during the show, and the recipient need not be a blue ribbon winner.
WILLIAM F. CLARK AWARD may be awarded to the entry in the Design Division at the Barnstable County Fair which best exemplifies the Sensitive Use of Plant Material. The Award, in the form of a certificate, may be awarded only once, and the recipient need not be a blue ribbon winner.
LAVERNE COLLARD DESIGN AWARD is awarded in recognition of a design of outstanding beauty in the use and arrangement of predominantly fresh plant material. The Award, a crystal bowl, may be awarded only once during the show, and the recipient need not be a blue ribbon winner.
ROBERTA CLARK AWARD may be awarded to an exhibit of outstanding horticultural quality in the Horticulture Division at the Barnstable County Fair. The Award, in the form of a certificate, is awarded only once during the show, and the recipient need not be a blue ribbon winner.
