ONGOING PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS

CIVIC DEVELPOMENT PROJECTS

Heights Retail District Plantings

Started as a new project in 2007 to “adopt” abandoned planters, we won First Place in the Chamber of Commerce’s annual town planter competition and will be adding plantings to provide a year round accent to the Arlington Heights retail district, making it a pleasant place for customers to shop.

Foot of the Rocks Visibility Site
Started in 1996 under the challenge from the GCFM of finding an “ugly spot” within a chapter town and revitalizing it, we chose the historic Revolutionary marker and watering trough located at the junction of Lowell Street and Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington.

Cooke’s Hollow/Mill Brook
This conservation site and sitting area for reflection on Mystic Street along the Mill Brook, behind the Community Safety Building was a major Garden Club project in the early 1970’s.  The Town of Arlington’s Conservation Commission which oversees Cooke’s Hollow is in the planning stages for a $75,000 revitalization and conservation project in this area. With that in mind, the Club will do minimal plantings this year for the 100 square foot entryway to the site considering the need for industrial machinery to have access to the conservation work.

Jason Russell House Herb Garden and Flagpole Plantings
In preparation for the bicentennial in 1975, the Club designed and planted an 18th century authentic herb garden at this historic house located on the corner of Jason Street and Massachusetts Avenue.  It has been maintained by the Club ever since with a brief respite in the 1980’s when construction for a new addition took place.  We have gone through a small redesign to bring the area back to 18th century standards and have created a brochure to detail the herbs in the garden, their medicinal and edible uses, history of the house and our affiliation with the Arlington Historical Society who maintains the house and museum with special exhibits and tours for citizens and elementary school groups.

POPS Concert Decorations
Working with the Arlington/Belmont Philharmonic Society and the Chamber Chorus for the town-sponsored strawberry festival and annual concert in June, the club provides floral decorations for tables placed around the filled-to-capacity auditorium.  This festival and concert is a town favorite and our newly themed decorations have been a hit with the guests.

Garden Therapy
Monthly visits to the Park Avenue Nursing Home in Arlington on the first Monday of each month give us the opportunity to work with the residents, providing projects that use fresh and dried materials.  Refreshments and a sing-a-long are part of every Garden Therapy day.

Environmental Programs
Under the guidance of our Environment Chairman, we participate in recycle programs for button batteries, ink jet cartridges, and cell phones.  Working with the Town to aid them being honored as a Tree City USA for the 6th year, we gift a tree each Arbor Day. This year will be our 76 tree.  Arbor Day trees have been planted within Arlington at the Olmstead-designed park at Town Hall, historic Whittemore Robbins House, the Old Burying Ground, Robbins Library, Park Circle, and the new McClellan Park.
