District II EMAIL Contact: Marion Romeo What a Garden Club can do! Spring with Olympus Garden Club Olympus Garden Club is a District II, Federated Garden Club of New York State. We are based in Brooklyn, New York and work with youth, seniors, residents, and community gardeners in New York City to educate and beautify neighborhoods. This past spring we worked in Brooklyn neighborhoods on five planting projects. We worked on planting tree beds, beautifying a community garden, planting shade plants in a children’s garden, planting containers with a group of seniors, and working with a children’s garden club at the Brooklyn Public Library. | One of our members, Amelia Estrada, suggested that we plant tree beds on the streets where our members lived because it would be easy for us to take care of them on our own blocks. She also suggested that we placed signs with our name in the beds to advertise that our club did the beautification. So we got plants from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Brooklyn GreenBridge community horticulture plant distribution to put in the tree beds. We planted three beds on two block in different neighborhoods and placed the signs. The neighbors on Amelia’s block enjoyed the new beds so much that they gave a donation to Olympus. | |
| Another member, Johanna Willins, got us involved in the planning for a new community garden getting started. Two years ago in the fall we planted spring bulbs in this newly formed community garden and we were asked to continue the beautification. This spring with more plants from Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Brooklyn GreenBridge community horticulture plant distribution we planted the garden with a wonderful group of youth from the East New York Farms youth program. We put in a garden of native and butterfly plants that would bring and keep beneficial insects in the garden. We planted native trees and shrubs that would add shade around the seating area over time, mulched the area and left with a promise from the gardeners that they would water the garden. | | District II board member, Solita Stephens, sent out an email request to the District II board requesting donations of shade plants for the children’s garden. The board members responded by bringing
| a variety of shade plants to the board meeting. These plants got placed in a shaded berm in the children’s garden area of the Hattie Carthan Community Garden that was already planted with vegetables by a group of children from a local public school. Other plants got planted in containers that would be used to beautify a new farmers’ market opening next to the garden in a few days. Another group of enthusiastic young people helped to put these plants in the ground. | |
| We were recommended to the director of Quincy Senior Residence three years ago by the now past director of Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Brooklyn GreenBridge. They wanted a therapeutic gardening program for their seniors and we started working with them then. This year we helped them with their window box planting, gave them tips on weeding and mulching the perennial garden we worked on the first year and joined them for their second annual family and friends’ celebration. | | One of our members, Roberta Raysor, works at the Brooklyn Public Library and because they knew she was a member of a garden club, they asked for our help with the new children’s garden program they wanted to start. We met with them, gave them a general outline to use for the program and met with them as a group a few time to get the program started. We planted shade plants with them at the children’s entrance and hopefully in the fall they will be able to plant some fall vegetables. They learn about plants, how to plant, and do journaling when they finish. In April and May we met with them weekly and for the rest of the season bi-weekly. We have been fortunate to work with a wonderful group of young people this year and the children from the library continued that trend. As I mentioned before, this year as in past years we have been fortunate to work with a diverse group of residents. Because we have members from all over Brooklyn, NY we are able to get involved in a range of projects that keep us involved and in tune with our mission to educate, improve, and beautify our neighborhood.
