Ballston Spa House and Garden Club

CLUB MEETINGS
January 2008 – December 2008

Regular meetings of the club are held the 2nd Thursday of the month at member’s homes, unless otherwise noted.  Meetings begin at 1:00 p.m.  Annual dues are $25 per person.

Pat Wania installed the officers using the Ceremony of the Rose.  A business meeting followed and the day ended with a birthday celebration for Jenny Talbot, Fran Bannon and Mary Phillips.

Organizing Committees and Procedures
for the remainder of the year

Program:Making Paper Roses Hands-on-Demonstration

The program will take place at Brookside Museum.  Natalie has begun a business out of her home crafting beautiful paper roses that are had to tell from the real thing.  The Club presented one of these perfect red roses to Pat Burnham, outgoing Club President, at the January meeting.  The Club plans to participate in this demonstration and would like to make a bouquet that can be displayed at one of the community places in the Village.

Garden Decorating with Christi Kerls-Tacy, owner of Genevieve's Home and Garden Decor

The program will take place at Genevieve’s Home and Garden Décor on Front Street in Ballston Spa.  Christi's decorating finesse has been featured in several national magazines including the fall and winter 2007 issues of Better Homes and Gardens' Do It Yourself and in this spring's 2008 Better Homes and Gardens' Bath Makeovers.

Sue Melna of Sue's Fine Gardening
and Eileen Block, member and practicing Chiropractor

Hostess:Maureen Mariani
Co-Hostess:No Co-hostess necessary 

Sue Melna of Sue’s Fine Gardening will speak to the club, focusing on ideas for the Jim Tedisco Trail Garden that the Club has as a major project each year.  We will also have a recap of the District Meeting, which the Club will have hosted earlier that week, while the event is still fresh in our minds. 

Eileen Block, member and practicing Chiropractor will speak to the club about preparing our bodies for gardening with stretching exercises.

Program:Hosting the Village of Ballston Spa Board at 9 Liberty Street

Click on photo to enlarge The Village of Ballston Spa Board Meeting will take place in Mary Colby’s yard (weather permitting). There will be a short reception co-hosted by any Club member who wishes to take part.

Program:

Strawberry Shortcake Social with Members of The Glenville Hills Garden Club.

The Glenville Hills Garden Club will join us at The Brookside Museum for a Strawberry Shortcake social gathering.  They are providing the food and we will provide drinks. 

Brett Van Zandt will speak to us about The Springs Botanical Garden project at The Saratoga Spa State Park.


Summer Program: July 10, 2008

Club Members will invite fellow club members to view their gardens and provide refreshments.  A map and schedule will be published soon.

Program:Bonsai Gardens of Charlton
Hostess:Pat Burnham
Garden Club members will bring their lunch and we will eat on the grounds of the Bonsai Gardens of Charlton.  Following the picnic lunch, the proprietor of the gardens will give the group a tour and talk about growing bonsai.

Program:Floral Craft Project to donate to Maplewood Manor             
Hostess:Lorraine McPherson
Co-Hostess:Barbara Millington
Phoebe Hunt-Fountaine, member of the Schuylerville Garden Club, will demonstrate a craft project, making teacup floral arrangements that will be donated to Maplewood Manor.

Items donated by members will be auctioned and the funds used for programs the club will support.

Program:Holiday Party
Hostess:Dolores Taisey, The Medbery
Co-Hostess:Judy Esposito

The holiday party will be held at The Medbury. Inn and Spa, 48 Front Street, Ballston Spa.  Food will be provided by all members.

New Committees will be formed for the 2009 year.

Program:The Mango Tree
The club will invite Justina Danison, a local artisan, to demonstrate her craft of Orgami at a local business that specializes in fair trade imports, The Mango Tree.

Program:How to Start a Community Garden
Hostess:Pat Burnham
Co-Hostess:Mary Colby
Sharon DeLorenzo of the Capital District Community Garden, will come to speak about starting and maintaining a community garden.
