Wollaston Garden Club
ART IN BLOOM 2007

On April 24, club members and the general public were offered an opportunity to spend the evening at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston free of charge.  The purpose of the event, in addition to giving visitors a look at all the Museum has to offer, is to showcase arrangements done by various Massachusetts garden clubs.  There are no prizes given, as the opportunity to participate is an honor in and of itself.  WGC has participated several times over the years, and copies of earlier arrangements can be found following this article.  This year, we had two experienced arrangers representing us—Pat Artis as Arranger, and Cynthia Lewis (Antonopoulos) as Assistant.  Our artifact this year was a “power figure” (nkisi nkonde) from the African Collection.  The following is the description provided by the Museum:

This standing wooden figure, covered with white pigment, was created to house the spirits of ancestors.  The ngana specialist, who commissioned and owned the figure, would activate the powers of protection, punishment or healing by hammering nails into it.  The figure’s open mouth suggests the uttering of judgments, and the mirror in the abdomen deflects danger.

The first few photos show our artifact from several different angles, and it’s easy to see what a great job Pat and Cynthia did interpreting it.  The rest of the pictures are simply ones that I particularly liked, or that I thought were good representations of the subject matter.  All the photos should give you a good feel for how hard all the clubs worked on the project, and hopefully will encourage you to join us next year.
